Role Of The Department
 
Digital Media is an important entitlement for all young people in an increasing digital culture. It furnishes pupils with skills; knowledge and understanding that will help them to take a full and active part in social, cultural, economic, civic, intellectual life now and in the future. To be digitally literate is to have access to a broad range of technological and cultural resources, which our department provides. The department aims to help pupils make and share meaning in different modes and formats: to create, collaborate and communicate effectively.
 
The Digital Media department involves and helps pupils to critically engage with technology. The subject gives pupils the ability to take advantage of the wealth of emerging opportunities associated with digital technologies, whilst also remaining alert to the various challenges technology can present. Digital Media education seeks to prepare our pupils to make sense of the World and to thrive socially, intellectually and economically. It also enables us as teachers in the department to make the most of the pupils multiple interactions with digital technology and the media.

The aims of Digital Media Department is to provide pupils with a framework of knowledge, attitudes and skills relevant to life, employment and further studies, which will enable them to fulfill their role in a modern changing society.
 
We aim to provide our pupils with:
  • High quality innovative learning experiences
  • Opportunities to experience using the latest technology, software and photographic equipment
  • To help pupils to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible learners
  • To maintain and/or stimulate pupil curiosity, interest and enjoyment in the digital media subjects
  • To nurture the creativity of pupils
  • To provide pupils with technological skills in graphic design, photography, filming, animation and editing
  • To allow pupils to critically engage with technology and how to use it
  • To provide a range of equitable, stimulating and enjoyable learning experiences and guidance which encompasses the values of a Catholic, caring community within which each pupil has the opportunity to reach full potential in both academic and vocational achievement and personal and social development.

 

KS4

As a department we offer both GCSE and level 2 subjects to cater for all our pupils needs.
As a department we offer a GCSE in Moving Image Arts and a Level 2 in Occupational Studies in Technology and Innovation.
 
Pupils may choose to study the subject further at GCSE.

GCSE Moving Image Arts
 
The Moving Image Arts course at GCSE has recently been revised and consists of 3 Components.
Component 1: Critical Understanding of Creative and Technical Moving Image Production (40%)
Component 2: Acquisition of Skills in Moving Image Production (20%)
Component 3: Planning and Making a Moving Image Product (40%)

Pupils undertake study and development of skills in the following areas:
  • Film language (camera, editing, lighting, sound, animation);
  • Genre and representation;
  • Creative production techniques;
  • Production management; and
  • Industry contexts.
 
The Schedule of Work is as follows:
 
Year 11;
Component 1: Teaching
Component 2: Controlled Assessment Tasks
Task 1: Storyboarding
Task 2: Camera Work and Editing (combined skills areas)
Task 3: Postproduction Sound; and
Task 4: Stop-Motion Animation.
 
Year 12;
Component 3: Planning and Making a Moving Image Product·
Students create an individual film or animation of approximately 2 minutes in length.
Component 1: Online Examination

Occupational Studies – Technology and Innovation – Level 2
 
The Occupational course consists of 2 units and is internally assessed
 
Year 11 – Unit 2 – Digital Imaging
Pupils will develop skills in creating digital images using a variety of applications. They will acquire skills that will allow them to learn functions of digital camera, to understand different styles of Photography and Digital Design.
 
Schedule of work is as follows:
 
  • Using equipment to create digital images
  • Capturing images in different styles and genres
  • Manipulating images in a software package e.g. Photoshop
  • Presenting a project to an audience
  • Consideration of career opportunities within the Digital Imaging Industry
  • Evaluating own performance
Year 12 – Unit 3 – TV and Film Production
Pupils will gain hands on experience of how to identify various types of films. The unit will help pupils understand various stages and processes, which are required to make a short movie. This movie will be screened to an audience and pupils will get the opportunity to receive feedback for their work.
 
Schedule of work is as follows:
 
  • Consideration of health and safety issues within the TV and Film production Industry
  • Consideration of potential career opportunities
  • The movie production process
  • Editing and screening a movie
  • Consideration of environmental issues within the TV and Film Production Industry
  • Reviewing and Evaluating own performance

KS5

Pupils may chose to study the subject further at A Level.

Within KS5 the Digital Media Department offers various subjects. We offer A Levels in both Media Studies and Moving Image Arts and Cambridge Technical Extended Certificates in Media Production.
 
The Media Studies course at A Level consists of four units. Two at AS Level and two at A2 Level.
 
Unit 1: MS1 – 25% overall and 50% at AS: External Assessment
Media Representations and Responses
Three compulsory questions, including one question on unseen audio-visual or print based material.
 
Unit 2: MS2 25% overall and 50% at AS: Internal Assessment
Media Production Processes
Three components. One pre-production (20); one production which develops from the pre-production (40); and one report on the production process (40)
 
Unit 3: MS3 25% - Internal Assessment
Media Investigation and Production
Three components: a written investigation into media text(s) based on one or more of the key concepts – genre, narrative or representation; a media production and an evaluation of how the production is informed by investigative research.
 
Unit 4: MS4 25% - External Assessment
Media – Text, Industry and Audience
Candidates must study 3 Media Industries and 3 texts from each. Pupils will answer 3 essay questions in their exam based on their chosen Industries and Texts.
 
The Moving Image Arts course at GCE (CCEA) consists of:
 
AS-Level: Year 13:
AS1: Creative Production: Foundation Portfolio (70%)
AS2: Critical Response - (30%)
 
A2-Level: Year 14:
A2/1: Creative Production & Research: Advanced PORTFOLIO (AL 35%)
A2/2: Critical Response & Specialisation (AL 15%)

Cambridge Technicals are vocational qualifications that are aimed at our pupils aged 16 + and are a good stepping-stone to further education.
 
We offer a Level 2 Extended Certificate in Media Production and pupils complete 3 units of work in Year 13 and all work is internally assessed.
 
Unit 1: Introducing Media Products
This unit aims to allow pupils to understand media institutions, how they work and the products they produce. They’ll look at production processes, target audiences, distribution and marketing through the analysis of media products.
 
Unit 2: Print Media Production
Pupils will gain a deeper understanding of print media organisations and their products through this unit. They’ll plan a new print media product and produce materials for it.
 
Unit 3: Graphic Design
Pupils will learn how to generate ideas for two promotional items for a planned original media product, in response to a client brief. They’ll gain practical skills by planning and producing these items and will also understand how to review them.
